Afternoon Tea with Dustin of Dustin Mitchell Design

I've said this once but I'll say it again, one of my favorite parts of blogging is the people whom I've met through out. This community is so welcoming and genuine. A few weeks ago during a Twitter chat I had the chance to meet the lovely Dustin of Dustin Mitchell Design. She does just about everything from photography to design services, this girl does it all. I'm so glad that I got the chance to 'chat' with her and be able to share more about her.

I also got the chance to feature a fashion blog post on her site, check it out here.

First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself!
Hey there! My name is Dustin and I love cookie dough ice cream, everything Kate Spade, Lounging by the pool and overall being creative.

The number one loves in my life are my husband Michael and my fur baby, Thorson Eugene Mitchell. And yes I did give my dog an awesome full name.

But back to being creative, my full time job is being a designer. I am a freelance graphic designer for anyone looking to stand out in this world of visual eye candy. I also do Photography because that goes hand in hand with creating digital designs for me. But then sometimes I also like to hope on my sewing machine and just make a handmade item.

Did you always want to go into design?
Actually no! The first graphic design class I took in college was dreadful. Or I didn’t have the right attitude to digest the skills. I told myself that I would never become a graphic designer and that I was going to be a famous impressionist painter. I had grand dreams and delusions during that period.

After a while I realized I didn’t have the needed knowledge to showcase my paintings and went back to graphic design. Once I had the desire to learn it I soak it all up like a sponge. I love everything about digital creating now and couldn’t imagine my life without it.

Where do you find your inspiration & creativity?
I find my inspiration and creativity from everyday people and other artists. I love finding other talented creative on Instagram especially. And of course Anchored in the South has been very motivating to for me too. I love everything you share.

What's your advice for anyone starting out in design or photography?
I would say to take advantage of YouTube! Seriously there is so much free information out there. Even after spending countless hours earning my art degree I still spend a lot of time on YouTube learning. Never stop enhancing your skill set.

Where do you see yourself in the next few years?
I honestly have a lot of interests and I’m just not sure about that yet. And you know what, I think that’s perfectly okay. I’m in a period of my life where I’m just discovering everything I love instead of narrowing in on a niche’. I believe I will eventually narrow in, but I’m just not ready to yet.

Can you tell us about some of the goals you have for your business,
blog, and just life in general?
My goal right now is to be consistent in everything I do. I want to post videos, blogs, and social media ads regularly. And I have been doing a great job of that this year, but I can always get better.

As for as life goals, my husband and I plan on buying a house this summer. Which I am totally pumped about! There will be a lot of opportunities I can take advantage of having more space.

What's one of your favorite posts or projects you've done?
My favorite project to date and one that I don’t talk about a lot yet is my children’s picture book Alivia’s Angels. I wrote and illustrated the book myself three years ago as a senior in college. It’s available for sale here.

  1. I think it's really interesting how Dustin didn't immediately fall in love with graphic design, which is refreshing to hear. It seems like what is more often the case is that graphic design was a natural medium of expression that took work to develop, but didn't necessarily take work to start :) -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey's
